The only thing worse than having your computer compromised by a nasty worm or virus is realizing it was your own misguided click that made it happen. A new mandatory training program hopes to prevent NSCC staff from having to feel that sort of shame while also protecting NSCC’S digital infrastructure.
By now, staff will have received an email informing them of online cyber awareness training they need to complete by March 31.
“NSCC cybersecurity awareness training for employees has been on the radar for some time now, and after taking the time to carefully review multiple computer-based training platforms, we are now in a position to roll it out to all employees,” says Dale Facey, manager of NSCC digital innovation and technology, via email.
The courses are cybersecurity overview and password security basics by SafeCollegesTM, a provider of online safety and compliance programs. The courses are expected to take no more than 30 minutes to complete.
Though there have been no specific incidents that prompted the decision for this training, social engineering—tricking people into giving out personal information—is becoming more advanced and frequent. Awareness training will help reduce these threats says Facey. “It is widely recognized that cybersecurity awareness training is a key piece to an overall cybersecurity program for most organizations.”
Facey says that NSCC is continuously working to improve cybersecurity within the college and is currently exploring ways to provide similar training for students in the near future.
